RUUSK COUPLE: HANNAH + SAM

RUUSK COUPLE: HANNAH + SAM

Sam and Hannah’s love story is woven into the colours of their personalised Parti Sapphire Solitaire – a gemstone that shifts between ocean blues, lush greens, and warm golden tones. Each hue reflects a piece of their journey: the beaches Hannah grew up on, the mountains they’ve climbed together, and the blue-washed Moroccan town where Sam proposed at sunset.

A story of partnership, serendipity, and all the chapters still to come, Sam and Hannah share a glimpse into their love story: the moments that brought them together, the memories that shaped their bond, and the joy of stepping into this new season of life hand in hand.

Can you share the moment you first connected - what drew you to one another in those early days?

Hannah: We met at a pub while we were at uni. I’d lost my friends, and a creepy guy wouldn’t leave me alone, so in order to lose him, I walked up to a random group of people for help - and one of them happened to be Sam. We instantly clicked, and I felt safe, comfortable, and genuinely listened to. We had so much in common that it was easy to be around him. After that night, we kept running into each other and one day when I spotted him standing in front of me in a huge festival crowd, it felt like fate was pushing us together.

Sam: I was drawn to Hannah’s happy, positive, and kind nature straightaway. We clicked easily — we’d both spent time living and working in Canada, which gave us this instant shared understanding of adventure and independence. And with both of us loving the outdoors, it all just felt really natural from the beginning.

Is there a small gesture or everyday habit your partner has that makes you feel especially seen or loved?

Sam: Whenever I set a goal or have a tough task ahead of me, Hannah is always the first to encourage me. She backs me completely and reminds me I can do it. This consistent support makes me feel seen and loved.

Hannah: Sam understands me like no one else. He can turn even the most boring task into something fun, and no matter what mood I’m in, he somehow knows exactly what to say and do to get me to smile. Whether I’m cranky, sad or exhausted, he has this ability to lift me up and make everything feel lighter.

When you think back on your relationship so far, is there a memory that feels like a turning point or a favourite chapter?

Hannah: I feel like every chapter of our relationship just keeps getting better and better. We have studied together, started our careers, travelled, and even bought and renovated our first home. Our recent six-month backpacking trip was something truly special. We spent every single day together exploring the world and never got sick of each other. Coming back to busy “real life” made me realise how rare and precious that time together really was. I am so excited for all the chapters still to come.

Sam: Living together in Newcastle during our final years of uni was definitely a favourite chapter. We had so much time together; mornings at the beach, camping trips on the weekends, and just enjoying that easy, relaxed lifestyle. It felt like a really special stage where we grew a lot together.

Tell us some more about your proposal, and the lead up to your special holiday. What was going through your minds during that moment, and how did it all come together?

Sam: Hannah’s birthday fell at the start of our six-month backpacking trip through Europe and South America. We’d planned to be in Chefchaouen in Morocco, a stunning mountain town where everything is painted blue. I knew it would be the perfect place to propose. When discussing engagement a while back, Hannah had mentioned she would love to design a ring together, so I’d organised a couple of inexpensive placeholder rings, but they got lost in the mail! So, I had the plan — just not the ring. On the day, we celebrated her birthday with dinner and then headed back to our rooftop to watch the sunset over the valley. It was quiet after the call to prayer, and it just felt like the moment. I got down on one knee and asked her to marry me. She said yes straightaway. I ended up finding a blade of grass, and I tied it around her finger. It sounds funny, but it was honestly perfect, natural and exactly us.

Hannah: Sam proposed at the start of our six-month trip, it was the most beautiful, calm and loved-filled moment. It was just the two of us, and so quiet, it felt like we were the only people in the whole world. We were on a rooftop overlooking a mountain surrounded by blue buildings - the setting sun was reflecting off the blue buildings and made the mountain glow blue. I remember a wave of certainty and happiness washing over me... of course the answer was yes. It made our whole adventure feel more meaningful, almost like an engagement honeymoon! It is a moment I’ll carry with me forever.

You both were part of the creation process of designing your gorgeous engagement ring - what do you love most about it? And what drew you to Sapphires?

Hannah: When Sam and I started talking about engagement, I knew I wanted us to design the ring together. From day one, we’ve always been a team, so creating something as meaningful as an engagement ring felt like something we should do side by side. We wanted something that truly represented both of us and the rare, special love we share. It felt like a truly unique gemstone would capture this. We dreamt up the design while on our trip, drawing inspiration from the blue oceans we’ve swum in, the green mountains we’ve climbed, and all the places that have shaped us. Our blue-green-yellow parti sapphire is incredible. It changes colour in different light. It reminds me of the ocean and the golden light of the sun. It is so beautifully crafted, deeply meaningful, and feels so perfectly “us”.

Sam: Sapphires felt like the perfect choice for us for a few reasons. We got engaged in Chefchaouen, so the colour already had this special connection to that moment. Hannah also grew up by the beach, so the blues and greens reminded us of the ocean. And for me, my family had a sapphire mine on our farm, so the stone carries this personal tie to my own history. We chose a parti sapphire because we loved the variation of colours. One of our favourite things is how it shifts and changes in different light; sometimes it’s blue, sometimes green, sometimes a mix of both. It feels alive and unique, and we’re still surprised by it all the time.

Have you begun dreaming up your wedding day yet, or are you taking time to simply savour this newly engaged bubble?

We’re really enjoying just being engaged and aren’t in any rush to tie the knot after our trip. It’s hard not to think about it though, and we’ve started putting together a rough outline of what we’d like our wedding to look like and the time of year we’d love to have it. We want to have a simple, intimate wedding, surrounded by the people we love most. But for now, we’re just savouring this newly engaged bubble.
