Here are six interesting facts about these beautiful gemstones:
- Sapphires are often associated with holding mystical powers. In ancient times, it was believed that Sapphires protected from evil and would ward off illness. This stone was also believed to bring gifts of fulfilment, joy, prosperity, inner peace and beauty.
- Formed from volcanic activity, the slower the magma cools, the larger the Sapphire will be. Due to the natural circumstances, no two Sapphires will ever look exactly the same.
- Australia has been a major Sapphire producer for over a hundred years, and once produced around 70% of the world’s supply.
- Sapphires can come in all colours; white, yellow, green and even pink (with the exception of red, which is a Ruby). The rarest type of Sapphire is a pinkish-orange variety called Padaradscha – which comes from the Sanskrit word for lotus flower.
- The most famous royal Sapphire is the engagement ring given by Prince Charles to Lady Diana in 1981, which features an 18-carat oval Blue Sapphire surrounded by Diamonds. Prince William gave his late-mother's ring to Princess Kate, who now wears this very special piece.
- The largest Sapphire ever cut is the Millennium Sapphire, which was discovered in Madagascar and weighs 61,500 carats. The current fair market value of this stone is USD $100-150 million!
